NJASLA is proud to announce that Ilonka Angalet, Principal Landscape Architect for the Port Authority of NY& NJ  and NJASLA Secretary has accepted an invitation to join the Search Committee for Landscape Architecture Department Chair for the Rutgers University School of Environmental and Biological Sciences.  As the only CLARB certified undergraduate program in New Jersey, it is important to NJASLA that the chosen candidate’s philosophy and goals are responsive to the needs of the profession.  We are confident that Ilonka will deftly address these concerns and forge a synergy between academia and profession that will well serve the design community and NJASLA.

News from ASLA Divisions
Government Affairs

  • UPARR is Back! Support the Urban Revitalization and Livable Communities Act

ASLA members are encouraged to use the Advocacy Network to urge their legislators to co-sponsor H.R. 3734, the Urban Revitalization and Livable Communities ActThis measure would provide grants for the creation, rehabilitation, and maintenance of parks and recreational spaces.  The legislation includes several provisions that could utilize the skills of landscape architects.  H.R. 3734 is meant to replace the now “defunct” Urban Parks and Recreation Recovery (UPARR) program.  Currently ASLA members have sent 533 messages to their members of Congress.  However, more advocacy efforts are needed – please send messages to your representatives today!

Education

  • Next week, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on Energy will hold a hearing on several energy bills, including H.R. 957, the Green Energy Education Act of 2009. This bill would provide grants to university programs related to the design and construction of high performance buildings. The legislation specifically states that, in awarding grants, the Department of Energy should give priority to university programs in design, architecture, landscape architecture, and city, regional, or urban planning. ASLA government affairs staff worked closely with the bill’s author Congressman Mike McCaul (TX) to include landscape architecture programs in the bill. H.R. 957 passed the House of Representatives on April 22, 2009.
  • The LARE Prep Subcommittee has unveiled a new feature in its efforts to support exam candidates in their efforts to get licensed.  The LARE Prep webpage now includes an email link that gives candidates an opportunity to ask questions regarding the LARE and licensure process.  The subcommittee plans to field those questions that cannot be resolved by staff
  • Locally, NJASLA will again host a LARE prep course at the Annual Meeting in Atlantic City, Sunday, January 24, 2010. Information and the registration website for both the Annual Meeting and the LARE course will be added to www.njasla.org this month.

  • Staff are currently creating an online sustainable design resource center for residential projects for professionals, which will be mirrored by an updated residential center aimed at the general public. The 2010 professional and student awards call for entries has been issued and entry forms are arriving daily.  There have already been more than 8,000 views of the CFE 2010 website, compared to last year’s 4,000 views in the same timeframe.  The print brochure was mailed last week to nearly 30,000 members and prospective entrants.
  • The Call for Presentations for the 2010 annual meeting education program will open next Wednesday, December 9.  An email announcing the call will be sent to all members, non-members, advertising prospects, and last year’s presenters. The deadline for submissions is January 27, 2010.

Update on NJASLA-sponsored Climate Change RU/SEBS Student Research

This fall, the undergraduate students in Intermediate Landscape Architecture 11:550:331 (http://jrstudio.rutgers.edu/index.html) are spending the entire semester exploring design information, interventions and implications of sea level rise and global warming in Cape May County, New Jersey with funding assistance from the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.

The project is building on the results of the Spring 2009 Advanced Environmental Geomatics class (http://advgeo.rutgers.edu/).  A wide variety of experts at Rutgers are investigating this important issue, and Rutgers’ Center for Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis has already released a research report on the Vulnerability of New Jersey's Coastal Habitats to Sea Level Rise giving a sense for both the seriousness of the threat and the diversity of issues wrapped up in this seemingly simple problem http://crssa.rutgers.edu/projects/
coastal/sealevel/index.html
).

High profile media outlets like PBS’ Nature have also recently heightened an awareness of the ecological importance of one of New Jersey’s real gems.

The first step of the process was the rapid assembly of a broad inventory or information base about the site – Cape May County.  This work is now online at:
http://jrstudio.rutgers.edu/Cape
MaySLR/Inventory.html

Since completing that work, they have moved on to the next phase: developing both a regional design vision for a post-sea level rise Cape May County and site-specific design interventions. This process will be enhanced by design jury and Cape May County staff comments that will play an important role in shaping the final materials that they present publicly and publish online.

Materials postings to be online at http://jrstudio.rutgers.edu/ and http://placesandspaces.rutgers.edu/ at the conclusion of the project.
